🐈⬛ The Shadow Album Theory
One of the things that makes Taylor Swift so compelling is how fully she commits to each era. Every album becomes its own world — new colors, new fashion, new visuals, new sound, even a new way of carrying herself in public. She doesn’t just release music; she builds an atmosphere around it that fans can step into and experience alongside her.
She’s also a mastermind of planning, often well in advance before anyone catches on
The ERAs tour kicked off in spring of 2023 and at the start of the last song, Karma, an orange door descends on the screen. This later turned out to be an easter egg for the fall 2025 album TLOAS which has an orange color theme.
In late 2024 Swift began to wear plaid, making fans speculate wildly. The answer was kinda - TLOAS album was released on National Plaid Day.
Color is a strong theme throughout all of Swift’s music - shades of burning red, scarlet and maroon. Bluest skies and faces turning grey. Golden daylight. Each ERA has had its distinct color, with Swift planning well in advance.
But what if… what if some eras were never part of the plan?
What if certain albums didn’t arrive because she scheduled them —
but because something inside her needed them to exist?
Reputation was released in 2017 - its songs form a linear narrative of a narrator seeking vengeance against wrongdoers but ultimately finding solace in a blossoming love. Many attributed its themes to a response from the backlash and controversies around Swift in the summer of 2016. But before there was reputation, there were rumors of Karma
When the pandemic forced the world to shut down in 2020, Swift has said that she immediately started writing folklore, “'Picking Up a Pen Was My Way of Escaping.”
In February 2024, when Swift attended the GRAMMYs, she was dressed in black and white, and fans following the usual easter eggs were frantic at the hope she’d be announcing the release of Reputation (Taylor’s Version). When she accepted her GRAMMY, she stunned everyone by announcing a brand new album - The Tortured Poets Department. Swift herself has said she felt she had to write this album, that it became a lifeline for her through tumultuous times through the beginning of the ERAs tour.
